Thesis Title: Creating Childhoods: the idea of the child in London schools and neighbourhoods 1870-1920
About
My research is concerned with how children were categorised through the development of compulsory classroom education in nineteenth-century and twentieth-century London. I am particularly interested in the creation of 'special' education for those who were considered 'deficient' and/or 'defective'. I am also concerned with the role architecture and photography have played in propagating or challenging such ideas and categorisations.
