About

My research is centered around the how the neo-liberalisation process,
consumer culture and cultural fragmentation in Turkish society is causing
the notion of community to be taken on an increasingly virtualized
character. My argument is that as Turkish society is becoming increasingly
complex, de-centered and poly-cultural, people begin to use the internet
as a way of re-constructing social bonds. Using the notion of secular,
nationalist identity as a leitmotif, I examine how online spaces both
unique to Turkish internet culture and international online spaces such as
Facebook determine the ways in which collective meaning is re-constructed
online. At the same time, I examine how the virtualization of community
has potentially  detrimental effects on offline social relations in
Turkey.
