About
Jennifer Gabrys is Senior Lecturer and Convenor of the MA Design and Environment at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research investigates the intersection of environments, materialities and communication technologies through theoretical and practice-based work. Projects within this area include a recently published book, Digital Rubbish: A Natural History of Electronics (University of Michigan Press, 2011), which examines the material geographies of electronic waste; and a study currently underway on citizen sensing and political ecologies, titled Program Earth: Environment as Experiment in Sensing Technology.
Gabrys is a Co-Investigator on the RCUK Energy Programme-funded project, ‘Energy and Co-Designing Communities’ [www.ecdc.ac.uk]. This study, which is a collaboration with Mike Michael (PI), Bill Gaver (CI) and the Interaction Research Studio, investigates how new technologies might be designed to engage communities in reducing energy consumption.
Gabrys is a member of the Surface Tension spatial practice publishing initiative [http://www.errantbodies.org/st_series.html]; and a member of Weather Permitting, a creative practice and research collaborative focused on climate change [www.weatherpermitting.org].
