Thesis Title: An Empirical Analysis of Musical Expression in Recordings by Selected Cellists

About

I am a PhD researcher in the Department of Music, Goldsmiths, University of London. My PhD thesis aims to discover what can the precise measurement of musical expression bring to the understanding and knowledge of general trends, pedagogical traditions and artistic innovations in twentieth-century cello playing on record.

With my main research areas in empirical musicology,  cello on record and performance studies, I am a regular contributor to music psychology conferences and journals: recently, I won the joint Aubery Hickman prize (the best graduate paper) in 2010 from the Society for Education, Music and Psychological Research at the Society’s biennial conference on “Empirical Musicology II: Empirical Approaches to Performance”.

I studied the cello at Trinity College of Music, London, leading to an MA in cello performance and also completed empirical MPhil research on music performance at Birmingham Conservatoire. I am also a freelance cellist and especially enjoy playing chamber music with my violinist sister Yu-Lee. I hope to undertake a further research on empirical musicology and/or music perception at the post-doc level.
