About
Patrícia Alves de Matos studied at FCSH and at Goldsmiths, University of London. Patrícia’s doctoral thesis is entitled: ‘Precarious Labour in Portuguese Call Centres: An Anthropological Study’ and she was supervised by Steve Nugent. The thesis explores the themes of alienation and exploitation within the Portuguese call centre sector by focusing on the nature of value-creation in the organisation of labour, the effects this regime has on workers’ consciousness and agency, and how these effects are expressed in terms of class, gender and age. These questions are examined within the broader political and economic context. She is now turning her thesis into a book.
She is currently a post-doctoral research fellow (Post-Doctoral fellowship, Foundation for Science and Technology - SFRH/BPD/69035/2010) at the Centre for Research in Social Anthropology (CRIA) at New University of Lisbon. Her post-doctoral research project will examine the themes of neo-liberalism, unemployment and the changing shape of the welfare state since the 1970s in Portugal and the UK.
